From Italy’s renowned Lugana region to the United States, this tour is reshaping the way American wine lovers experience Italian white wines.

From the shores of Lake Garda to the heart of New York, Miami, and San Francisco, Lugana Wines redefine sophistication. This exclusive tasting tour introduced U.S. audiences to the vibrant, mineral-rich flavors of Italy’s premier white wines.

Lugana wines have officially arrived on U.S. shores, making an impact in the nation’s top wine cities. With 28 wineries from Italy’s Lugana region touring New York City, Miami, and San Francisco, the Destination Lugana campaign is introducing a new audience to this exceptional Italian white wine.

Industry leaders, sommeliers, and trade professionals gathered for guided tastings, masterclasses, and intimate discussions on Lugana’s unique characteristics. More than 150 wine importers, restaurateurs, journalists, and influencers attended in person, while thousands followed along through social media.

The journey began in New York at Jupiter in Rockefeller Center, where Fabio Zenato, President of Consorzio Lugana DOC, and wine writer Wanda Mann introduced the distinct identity of Lugana wines and their growing presence in the American market.

The Rockefeller Center wine tasting was nothing short of a spectacular evening, where fine wine, impeccable service, and an atmosphere of refined elegance came together in perfect harmony. From the moment I stepped into the venue, I was immersed in a world of sophistication, with the towering city skyline providing a breathtaking backdrop. The ambience was warm and inviting, with soft lighting and elegantly arranged seating that encouraged conversation and connection among guests. There was an undeniable buzz in the air—one of excitement and appreciation for the artistry of winemaking.

The selection of wines showcased during the event was masterfully curated, offering a journey through exceptional vintages that delighted the palate with each sip. From crisp, refreshing whites, to sweeter offerings, every glass told a story of craftsmanship and tradition. Knowledgeable sommeliers guided us through the tasting, sharing insights into each wine’s origin, flavor profile, and ideal pairings, making the experience both educational and indulgent. Their enthusiasm and expertise elevated the evening, ensuring that every guest felt engaged and enriched by the experience.

Complementing the exquisite wines was a thoughtfully crafted array of hors d’oeuvres that perfectly balanced the flavors of the evening. Delicate bites of artisanal cheeses, succulent seafood, and expertly prepared charcuterie created a sensory experience that was both indulgent and memorable. Each dish was designed to enhance the nuances of the wines, bringing out the depth and complexity of every pour. The seamless coordination between the culinary offerings and the wine selections spoke to the careful planning and attention to detail that made the event truly exceptional.

Fabio Zenato, President, Consorzio Lugana

Interview with Fabio Zenato, President, Consorzio Lugana

Nestled along the picturesque shores of Lake Garda, the Lugana wine region is a hidden gem of Italian winemaking, known for producing elegant and expressive white wines. With a rich history and a growing global presence, Lugana wines are capturing the attention of American consumers who seek sophistication, versatility, and authenticity in their selections.

Today, I am honored to speak with Fabio Zenato, President of Consorzio Lugana, to delve into the essence of Lugana wines, their unique terroir, and the exciting opportunities they present in the U.S. market. Together, we’ll explore sustainability in winemaking, the influence of climate, and how Lugana continues to stand out amidst Italy’s famed wine landscape.

Joseph DeAcetis: Lugana wines have been celebrated in Italy for generations, but what makes them particularly appealing to American consumers today?

Fabio Zenato: I think that American consumers tend to stick to white wines identified by grape varieties with which they’re familiar, like Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon Blanc. Lugana wines are made from our native grape variety, Turbiana, and offer an exciting alternative that is approachable and food-friendly, with complexity and character. Because our grapes are grown in the unique microclimate near Lake Garda, Lugana wines have a crisp, mineral-driven profile with elegant floral and citrus notes. They’re refreshing on their own, but also complex enough to complement a wide range of cuisines, which resonates with the dynamic food culture in the U.S.

Joseph DeAcetis: With sustainability becoming increasingly important to wine buyers, how is the Lugana region ensuring eco-conscious production while maintaining the quality and tradition of its wines?

Fabio Zenato: The hailstorms we experienced in 2023 significantly reduced our production and were a stark reminder of how vulnerable our business is to climate change and how important sustainable practices are for the future of our wines. In response, many producers in our region are doubling down on eco-conscious practices, from organic and integrated vineyard management to more efficient water use and renewable energy adoption. At the Consorzio level, we are committed to supporting these initiatives while preserving the integrity of our winemaking tradition. Our goals are to protect our terroir and to ensure that Lugana continues to produce high-quality, expressive wines for generations to come.

Joseph DeAcetis: Many wine lovers associate Italy with reds like Barolo and Chianti—how does Lugana’s white wine stand out in a market traditionally dominated by bold reds?

Fabio Zenato: Lugana stands out by showcasing the diversity of Italian winemaking with a white wine that has real character and depth. What truly sets Lugana apart is its versatility: although based on a single grape variety, our wines are made in five distinct styles, from the classic Lugana DOC to Superiore, Riserva, Vendemmia Tardiva (late harvest), and Spumante (sparkling). These wines can be enjoyed young for their vibrant fruit and minerality or aged to reveal deeper, more layered expressions. With a range of producers offering their own interpretations, Lugana remains approachable in price yet rich in personality—an ideal discovery for wine lovers looking to explore regions and styles they don’t yet know.

Joseph DeAcetis: The Destination Lugana tour introduced these wines to major U.S. cities. What feedback have you received from American buyers, and how do you see Lugana’s presence growing in the U.S.?

Fabio Zenato: The feedback has been very positive. Buyers and sommeliers are impressed by the quality, consistency, and versatility of Lugana wines. Many are surprised by the depth and aging potential of a white wine that’s still relatively undiscovered in the U.S. The Destination Lugana tour has helped us educate and increase visibility in key markets. As awareness grows, we expect to see more Lugana on wine lists and retail shelves across the country. Our goal is to make Lugana a recognized category among American consumers who love white wines that are all about discovery, thoughtful winemaking, and great value for money.

Joseph DeAcetis: For someone new to Lugana wines, what’s the best way to experience them—from ideal food pairings to specific tasting notes that define the region’s signature style?

Fabio Zenato: The best way to experience Lugana is by visiting the region itself, along the south shores of Lake Garda. It’s a beautiful destination for wine lovers to explore local wines paired with local cuisine. Outside of the region, you can enjoy Lugana wines in many contexts. Take a classic Lugana DOC. Expect fresh citrus, white flowers, and a touch of salinity, with bright acidity and a mineral-driven finish. It pairs beautifully with seafood, light pastas, grilled vegetables, and sushi. For more complexity, try a Superiore or Riserva—age-worthy styles that show how much structure, depth, and complexity Turbiana can offer. With these wines, you can pair white meats and additional savory flavors and textures.

The service throughout the evening was exemplary, with an attentive and gracious staff ensuring that every guest felt welcomed and catered to. Glasses were never empty for long, and personalized recommendations from the sommeliers added a touch of exclusivity that made the evening feel even more special. Whether guiding conversations, refilling glasses, or offering insights into the pairings, the team behind the event exuded professionalism and passion, making every guest feel valued and appreciated.

As the evening unfolded, the joyous energy of the gathering was undeniable. Conversations flowed effortlessly, laughter echoed through the venue, and a shared appreciation for fine wine and good company made the experience truly unforgettable. It was an evening of celebration, sophistication, and camaraderie—a perfect testament to the magic that happens when great wine, exceptional service, and a stunning setting come together. I left Rockefeller Center that night with a deeper appreciation for the art of winemaking and the joy of sharing it with others.

Miami offered a vibrant mix of tastings and educational sessions at Kiki on the River and Piegari Ristorante. Wine expert Jacqueline Coleman led engaging discussions about Lugana’s versatility, capturing the interest of the city’s wine trade professionals.

On the West Coast, San Francisco welcomed the tour at Greens Restaurant, where Shelley Lindgren, Wine Director of A16 Restaurants, emphasized the complexity and aging potential of the Turbiana grape, the foundation of Lugana wines.

The tour’s influence extended beyond official events. Several distributors arranged private tastings to explore potential additions to their offerings, and Miami’s Vinoteca hosted a public tasting, reflecting a rising consumer interest in Lugana wines.

Next, Destination Lugana will travel to London in July, continuing its mission to introduce the world to this acclaimed wine region.
