OMEGA Celebrates Buzz Aldrin’s Moon Landing Legacy In 2023

On July 21, 1969, an astronaut for the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 11, Buzz Aldrin, walked across the moon’s surface wearing his OMEGA Speedmaster Professional. His first steps were a remarkable achievement for humanity – and also for the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional on his wrist – which at that moment, became the first watch worn on the moon. The Apollo 11 mission remains a legacy of OMEGA’s long heritage with NASA. In commemorating that story today – OMEGA celebrates the outstanding accomplishments of Buzz Aldrin himself.

On the anniversary of history’s first moon landing, Buzz Aldrin spent time with OMEGA, reflecting on the hours and the watch that made history on July 21st, 1969. When the mission touched down on the Sea of Tranquillity precisely 53 years ago, his first steps were a remarkable achievement for humanity – and also for the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional on his wrist – which, at that moment, became the first watch worn on the moon.

As well as recalling images of that famous day, OMEGA also captured a new portrait of Buzz Aldrin wearing the Speedmaster 321 (Ref. 311.30.40.30.01.001) – which houses the legendary calibre that powered every Speedmaster ever worn on the moon. From Apollo 11 to Apollo 17, the Calibre 321 was depended on by astronauts for its accuracy and reliability.

And now, fifty-three years later, the strong bond between NASA and Omega continues to celebrate the 1969 landing by honoring NASA with an epic portrait of Buzz Aldrin.

If a watch brand is ever associated with planet Earth’s moon, it would be OMEGA. Earlier this year, the Swiss watchmaker made a stellar collaboration by making the OMEGA x Swatch Moonswatch. The watch, known for its accuracy and reliability, had a complete sell-through and increased in value at once.

As for consumers, OMEGA’s history with NASA is an excellent point of interest. It is undoubtedly a great topic of discussion. And, on the anniversary of history’s first moon landing, Buzz Aldrin has reflected his experience and the watch that made Global history on July 21st, 1969.

But what I find most intriguing is how heritage meets the present. Omega captures a new portrait of Buzz Aldrin wearing the Speedmaster 321 (Ref. 311.30.40.30.01.001) – which houses the same calibre that powered every Speedmaster from Apollo 11 to Apollo 17. NASA had tested the watch, and like all crucial instruments sent on the mission, it had to be flight certified.

The Apollo 11 mission remains the most extraordinary highlight of OMEGA’s long heritage in space.

It is an honor to commemorate that story today – and celebrate the inspirational accomplishments of Buzz Aldrin himself.
