Caleb Williams Is Changing the Face of the NFL—and Menswear Should Be Paying Attention

The Chicago Bears superstar opened the 2026 season with painted nails, matcha in hand and a message bigger than football. After a record-setting year, Caleb Williams isn’t simply becoming the face of a franchise—he may be exactly the kind of new American style icon luxury menswear has been waiting for.

There are moments in sports when what happens before the game says almost as much about an athlete as what happens after the whistle blows.

For me, Caleb Williams arriving at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte for the Chicago Bears’ season opener against the Carolina Panthers was one of those moments.

Williams arrived wearing his now-signature custom-painted nails, wired headphones and carrying a matcha. Yet this time, the manicure wasn’t simply an expression of personal style. Created by nail artist Jeimy Lemus, the design on his right hand incorporated a heart alongside “988,” the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number, bringing attention to mental health awareness and suicide prevention. His left hand carried an outline of the Chicago skyline across three fingers—a personal salute to the city he represents.

I found the combination powerful because it encapsulates what makes Williams interesting far beyond football.

Here is an elite professional athlete entering one of America’s most traditionally masculine sporting arenas while refusing to surrender his individuality. Instead, he is expanding the visual vocabulary of what an NFL quarterback can look like.

And I think that matters.

Fashion has always been strongest when it reflects cultural change rather than simply selling clothing. Williams understands—whether deliberately or instinctively—that personal presentation is communication. His nails aren’t preventing him from throwing touchdowns. His interest in style isn’t diminishing his competitiveness. The two coexist.

That is precisely why menswear should be watching him.

Football Is Back—and America Is Ready

There is something uniquely American about the beginning of football season. By September, summer begins surrendering to fall. Stadiums fill again. Jerseys return to the streets. Fantasy football conversations become serious business. Sunday afternoons acquire their familiar rhythm, and suddenly millions of Americans are discussing quarterbacks, coaching decisions, injuries, rivalries and playoff possibilities.

The NFL doesn’t merely return as a sport. It returns as a cultural event. And this season there is plenty to watch. Established stars are defending their positions while younger quarterbacks increasingly represent the future of the league. Teams that surprised fans last season now have to prove their success was sustainable. Coaches have had an offseason to adjust, rookies are being tested against NFL speed, and every fan base begins September believing that perhaps this could be the year.

For Chicago, much of that hope rests on the shoulders of Caleb Williams.

And after what he accomplished last season, that optimism isn’t difficult to understand.

Who Is Caleb Williams?

For readers who know the name but don’t necessarily follow football closely, the résumé is already extraordinary.

Caleb Williams was born in Washington, D.C., and emerged as one of America’s most celebrated young quarterbacks. After beginning his college career at Oklahoma, he transferred to USC, where his combination of arm strength, improvisation, mobility and confidence made him a national star.

In 2022, Williams won the Heisman Trophy—the most prestigious individual award in college football—after throwing for 4,537 yards and producing an extraordinary 42-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The Chicago Bears subsequently selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The expectations were enormous. Chicago is one of America’s great football cities, but the Bears’ history at quarterback has often been complicated. Williams arrived carrying the burden of potentially becoming something generations of Bears supporters have been waiting for: a true franchise quarterback.

“Caleb Williams represents a new generation of American athlete—fearlessly competitive on the field yet equally confident expressing his individuality away from it. What strikes me about his painted nails this week is that they are more than a fashion statement; by incorporating 988 and a tribute to Chicago, he is using personal style to communicate purpose. As a menswear editor, I find that incredibly powerful. Caleb has the talent, athleticism, character and cultural relevance to transcend football, and I believe the right luxury menswear or grooming brand could build something extraordinary with him. He isn’t following an old definition of what an NFL quarterback should look like—he is helping create a new one.”

By his second season, he began delivering. Williams led Chicago to the NFC North championship and the Bears’ first postseason victory since the 2010 season. He threw for a franchise-record 3,942 yards, finishing with 27 touchdown passes against only seven interceptions.

Perhaps even more impressive was what happened when games appeared lost. Chicago won seven games in which it trailed during the final two minutes—six during the regular season and another in the playoffs. Williams engineered the winning drives in all seven. According to the Bears, no NFL team had accomplished that many such comeback victories since at least the 1970 NFL/AFL merger. That tells me something statistics alone cannot fully communicate. He believes the game is still his to win.

The Caleb Williams Moment I Haven’t Forgotten

If I had to select one moment from last season that defined Williams for me, I would go directly to Green Bay. On December 20, Chicago trailed the Packers 16-6 with less than two minutes remaining. Somehow, the Bears forced overtime. Then Williams connected with DJ Moore on a spectacular 46-yard walk-off touchdown pass, completing a remarkable 22-16 victory at Soldier Field.

The play was subsequently named the 2025 NFL Moment of the Year, and Tom Brady selected the touchdown as the best throw of the NFL season.

That is the Caleb Williams I admire watching. There is an athletic looseness to his game that can suddenly become explosive. He can extend a play, change an angle, move outside the expected structure and make something happen when the defense believes it has won the possession.

But athleticism alone isn’t what interests me. It’s the nerve. Quarterback may be the most psychologically exposed position in American sports. Every mistake is replayed. Every facial expression is examined. Every loss becomes a referendum on leadership. Williams appears increasingly comfortable carrying that attention. He doesn’t seem interested in becoming someone else’s idea of what a quarterback should be. I respect that.

Why Fashion Should Be Watching Caleb Williams

This is where the conversation becomes particularly interesting for StyleLujo.com

Professional athletes have become increasingly important to the global fashion ecosystem. The stadium arrival has effectively become another runway. Tunnel looks circulate instantly across Instagram and TikTok. NBA players helped transform pregame dressing into a major menswear showcase, and NFL players are increasingly doing the same.

Williams has something brands spend enormous amounts of money attempting to manufacture: recognizable personal identity. You know when you’re looking at Caleb Williams. The painted nails are part of it. His jewelry, hair, silhouettes and willingness to experiment are part of it. Even something as simple as walking into a stadium with headphones and matcha becomes part of a recognizable image. That authenticity has enormous value to fashion and grooming.

And importantly, Williams isn’t adopting fashion at the expense of athletic credibility. Quite the opposite. His performance gives his style greater cultural weight. He is now entering his third NFL season as a 24-year-old quarterback who was a No. 1 overall draft selection, Heisman Trophy winner, division champion and record-setting Bears passer. He’s also become prominent enough to land the cover of Madden NFL 27 and rank among the NFL’s top 10 players in jersey sales.

For luxury companies trying to reach younger male consumers, that combination is extremely attractive. His influence can naturally extend across tailoring, sportswear, footwear, watches, eyewear, jewelry, fragrance, skincare and men’s grooming. There is also an important generational shift occurring here.

Younger men increasingly reject the idea that grooming, fashion experimentation or self-expression somehow conflicts with masculinity. Williams doesn’t need to deliver a lecture about that evolution. He simply embodies it.

And that can be much more persuasive.

Readers interested in seeing that visual world firsthand should follow Williams through his official Instagram account, @ayeeecaleb, where football, celebrity, style and his personality increasingly intersect.

Why the Nails Matter

I don’t view Williams’ painted nails as a gimmick. Style becomes meaningful when it tells us something about the person wearing it. This week’s manicure illustrates that perfectly- with his iconic painted nails, created by Jeimy Lemus. One hand celebrates Chicago. The other directs attention toward 988 and mental-health awareness.

That transforms a grooming choice into a communications platform. Think about the visibility involved. Cameras zoom into a quarterback’s hands repeatedly during an NFL broadcast. Photographers capture them gripping the football. Images travel through sports media and social media around the world. Williams has taken that highly visible piece of real estate and made it personal. There is confidence in that decision. There is also intelligence in understanding the power of one’s platform.

The Right Menswear Partnership Could Be Enormous

From my perspective as a fashion editor, I believe there is a significant opportunity sitting in plain sight.

The right menswear brand should align with Caleb Williams. Not simply sign him, dress him for an event and issue a press release. I mean align with him. There is a difference.

The smartest partnership would allow Williams’ individuality to remain visible rather than polishing away everything that makes him interesting. Put him into exceptional tailoring, certainly—but allow the nails. Create sophisticated eveningwear, but let Caleb remain Caleb. Develop a campaign around the collision between American athleticism, confidence, grooming and contemporary masculinity. Imagine what an intelligent luxury house could do with that.

Williams possesses the physical presence of an elite athlete, the visibility of an NFL quarterback and the style curiosity of someone willing to challenge convention. More importantly, he belongs to a generation that doesn’t necessarily see traditional categories—athlete, fashion consumer, gamer, celebrity, activist—as separate identities.

They can all exist simultaneously.

That is where menswear is headed too.

My Best to Caleb

As another NFL season begins, my best wishes go to Caleb Williams.

There are many great athletes in professional football. There are fewer athletes who make you stop and watch because you genuinely don’t know what they might do next. And there are fewer still who possess enough individuality to influence culture outside their sport.

Williams increasingly appears capable of all three.

What I’ve always admired about his playing style is that sense of possibility. A collapsing pocket doesn’t necessarily mean the play is over. A late deficit doesn’t necessarily mean the game is lost. And apparently, being the starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears doesn’t mean he has to conform to somebody else’s definition of how an NFL quarterback should present himself.

That independence may ultimately become one of his greatest strengths.

The painted nails will inevitably generate conversation. Good. Fashion is supposed to generate conversation.

But look beyond the manicure.

Look at the player.

Look at the statistics, the comeback victories, the confidence, the athleticism, the cultural visibility and the increasingly recognizable personal style.

Caleb Williams isn’t simply dressing for the NFL spotlight anymore.

The spotlight is beginning to dress around him.

And somewhere in the luxury menswear world, a very smart brand should be paying attention.
