Vacheron Constantin Just Put a 200-Piece Feathered Serpent Inside a Watch—and It May Be the Wildest Métiers d’Art Collection Yet

The 270-year-old Swiss Maison turns the watch dial into a microscopic art gallery with Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Animal Kingdom—six extraordinary concept watches where feathers, glass, gold embroidery, origami, paper and wood transform wildlife into wearable works of art.

There are watches designed to tell time. There are watches designed to demonstrate wealth. And then there are watches that force us to reconsider exactly what a watch can be.

Vacheron Constantin’s newly unveiled Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Animal Kingdom belongs firmly in that final category.

Presented through the Swiss Maison’s “One of Not Many Crafts Programme,” the project consists of six concept watches devoted to the natural world. Yet describing them simply as animal-themed watches misses almost everything that makes them remarkable.

A serpent is constructed from microscopic pieces of real feathers. A transparent glass octopus seemingly floats above its dial. Manta rays are folded from pieces of Japanese paper measuring barely more than a centimeter. A tiger is embroidered with gold wire. A crocodile emerges from layers of sculpted white cotton paper. And a falcon takes flight through miniature wood marquetry.

This is watchmaking entering the territory of sculpture, textile art and objets d’art.

And for anyone unfamiliar with the French expression métiers d’art, understanding those two words is the key to understanding why this collection matters.

First, What Exactly Is Métiers d’Art?

Literally translated, métiers d’art means “artistic crafts” or “art professions.”

Within luxury watchmaking, however, the term carries considerably greater weight.

Métiers d’art refers to highly specialized decorative disciplines requiring exceptional manual skill—techniques such as hand engraving, enameling, guilloché, miniature painting, gem-setting and marquetry. Many developed centuries before modern industrial manufacturing and are traditionally transmitted from master artisan to apprentice.

The important word here is hand.

These are crafts in which the human hand remains central to the result. Minute variations aren’t necessarily imperfections; they can become evidence that an artisan actually created the object.

And performing these crafts on a watch presents an almost absurd technical challenge.

An artist creating a painting might have a meter-wide canvas. A sculptor might work on an object several feet tall. On a wristwatch, the artist receives a working surface only a few centimeters across—and whatever is created must coexist with an extraordinarily precise mechanical machine.

That is where Vacheron Constantin has built an important part of its identity.

The Manufacture has historically integrated artistic disciplines including engraving, enameling, guillochage and gem-setting into its watchmaking. What makes Tribute to the Animal Kingdom particularly interesting is that Vacheron Constantin has moved beyond the familiar vocabulary of watch decoration and invited craftspeople from outside conventional horology into its world.

The question effectively became:

What happens when an artist is forced to reduce an entire artistic discipline to the dimensions of a watch dial?

The answers are extraordinary.

The Who, What, Where and When of Vacheron Constantin

To understand why this experiment carries weight, you have to understand the company behind it.

Vacheron Constantin traces its beginning to Geneva in 1755, when 24-year-old master watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron hired his first apprentice.

That apprenticeship agreement is considered the birth certificate of the Manufacture. Vacheron Constantin today describes itself as the world’s oldest watch Manufacture in continuous operation since its founding.

The Constantin part of the story arrived later.

In 1819, Jean-Marc Vacheron’s grandson, Jacques Barthélémi Vacheron, partnered with businessman François Constantin. Constantin helped expand the company internationally and, that same year, wrote the words that became one of the Maison’s defining principles:

“Do better if possible, and that is always possible.”

More than two centuries later, that philosophy provides an almost perfect explanation for the Animal Kingdom project.

Rather than merely preserving historical craftsmanship behind glass, Vacheron Constantin is asking what those traditions can become next.

Six Animals. Six Crafts. Six Experiments.

The One of Not Many Crafts Programme functions as a creative incubator.

Instead of limiting Métiers d’Art to crafts historically associated with watchmaking, Vacheron Constantin invited six independent artisans to bring their respective disciplines into horology: Julien Vermeulen for featherwork, Simone Crestani for glass sculpture, Anja Midori for micro-origami, Laura Baverstock for gold embroidery, Marianne Guélyfor paper sculpture and Anna Le Corno for wood marquetry.

There was one enormous problem.

Space.

Inside the 42mm watches, the distance between the dial and protective sapphire crystal allows no more than approximately four millimeters of height.

Imagine asking a sculptor to build a convincing three-dimensional animal inside a space roughly equivalent to the thickness of two stacked nickels.

That constraint forced the artisans not merely to shrink their work, but in many cases to reinvent how they worked altogether.

The Feathersnake: The Watch I Cannot Stop Looking At

Of all six creations, the Feathersnake is the piece that immediately captured my attention.

There is something almost mythological about it.

An imaginary serpent coils across the dial through a fantastical landscape, its body shimmering as the light changes. Unlike painted representations of feathers or metal engraved to resemble plumage, this creature is actually constructed through micro-plumasserie—miniature featherwork.

The snake rises only about three millimeters above the dial.

Yet it possesses remarkable dimensionality.

Vacheron Constantin and feather artist Julien Vermeulen achieved this through a specially developed metal appliqué beneath the feathers. It acts almost like the skeleton beneath the creature’s skin, providing structure while allowing the feathers to retain volume.

Then comes the astonishing part.

The serpent is composed of more than 200 individual microscopic feather pieces, derived from just seven rare Lophophore feathers.

More than two hundred pieces.

On one watch dial.

Some elements measure mere fractions of a millimeter.

The surrounding landscape incorporates goose feathers, while the natural iridescence of the plumage produces colors and reflections that shift according to the angle of light.

That characteristic is particularly important because pigment can imitate color, but natural feather structure interacts with light in its own way. The result gives the serpent an almost living quality: it appears different as the wrist moves.

The project required approximately 250 hours, including research and prototyping.

Vermeulen even had to rethink his tools. At this microscopic scale, conventional featherworking instruments were inadequate. Reporting on the project describes the creation of a micro-scalpel fashioned from a reshaped needle, while another modified needle could deposit microscopic quantities of adhesive.

Think about that for a moment.

We have moved beyond watch decoration and into something approaching microsurgery.

For me, Feathersnake represents the philosophical center of this entire project. Vacheron Constantin isn’t simply showing us an exotic material. It is demonstrating what happens when human skill is pushed against an almost impossible physical boundary.

Glassoctopus: An Underwater World in 3.5 Millimeters

Italian glass artist Simone Crestani faced an entirely different problem.

His transparent octopus rises just 3.5 millimeters above a dark, hand-guilloché dial, appearing to drift through a midnight underwater environment.

Crestani formed the animal from tiny glass rods, melting and manipulating them using specially developed tungsten tools.

Glass introduces another complication: transparency.

Every overlapping tentacle potentially refracts, magnifies or distorts whatever lies beneath it. Consequently, the relationship between sculpture and dial had to be engineered as carefully as the sculpture itself.

Development lasted more than a year, while individual prototypes required days of work.

Oraygami: Paper Manta Rays Suspended in Time

For Oraygami, artist Anja Midori transformed Japanese paper into miniature manta rays measuring roughly 5 to 10 millimeters.

The paper was specially dyed and hand-colored before being folded and mounted on fine brass stems above a deep-blue hand-guilloché dial, creating the impression of rays swimming at different depths.

Some of the original paper pieces measured only 9 to 12 millimeters.

Even more astonishingly, the folds were executed using fingers, fingernails and the tip of a toothpick—without magnifying glasses.

Development stretched beyond two years, with early examples sometimes requiring as much as six hours simply to fold.

Tigerbroidery: Embroidering a Predator in Gold

Then comes Tigerbroidery, created by British embroidery artist Laura Baverstock.

Here a tiger prowls through dense vegetation, rendered with nine-carat yellow- and white-gold embroidery wire.

Its black stripes required specially developed ceramic-coated wire over copper, while fragments of gold wire measuring less than one millimeter create portions of the animal’s body.

Perhaps my favorite detail is the tiger’s eyes.

They required ten different shades of silk to create their expression and depth.

The embroidery is mounted to a specially engineered perforated titanium dial plate so that the textile artwork can become part of the watch without compromising its mechanical function.

The completed dial required approximately 210 hours.

Papercroc: Making White Paper Feel Alive

Marianne Guély’s Papercroc may initially appear quieter, but look closer.

An entirely white crocodile moves through an equally white landscape created from cotton paper of different weights.

Embossing, laser cutting and hand assembly create shadows that allow scales, foliage and the animal’s body to emerge without relying on conventional color.

Brass matrices engraved with crocodile scales and vegetation were heated to approximately 60–70°C and pressed into the paper to generate microscopic relief.

It demonstrates something fundamental about luxury craftsmanship: sometimes complexity doesn’t announce itself through diamonds or gold. Sometimes it reveals itself through shadow.

Woodenwings: A Falcon Built Feather by Feather

Finally, Anna Le Corno’s Woodenwings transforms 12 species of wood into a three-dimensional falcon.

Three marquetry approaches create its environment and body, including a special “feather-by-feather” assembly technique developed for the wing.

Normal woodworking tools were simply too large.

The solution involved surgical-style scalpels and custom miniature sanding instruments used under binocular magnification.

Again, the recurring theme becomes clear: every artisan had to unlearn scale.

The Mechanical Secret Behind the Art

None of these dials could work visually if conventional hour and minute hands were sweeping across the animals.

Vacheron Constantin had already solved that problem.

The watches use the Maison’s self-winding Calibre 2460 G4, a movement introduced in 2005 that displays hours, minutes, day and date through four apertures positioned around the perimeter of the dial.

There are no conventional central hands interrupting the artwork.

The mechanism essentially steps aside and allows the center of the dial to become a gallery.

The concept watches measure 42mm in diameter and 12.9mm thick, with cases executed in 18-karat white or pink gold depending on the model. The automatic movement operates at 4Hz and provides approximately 40 hours of power reserve.

Through the sapphire caseback, the mechanical side of the story remains visible—including a specially decorated gold oscillating weight.

Why Animal Kingdom Matters

Luxury is increasingly surrounded by technology capable of making objects faster, cleaner and more identical.

That is precisely why projects like Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Animal Kingdom matter.

These watches celebrate the opposite idea.

Time.

Human hands.

Experimentation.

Mistakes.

Prototypes.

Materials that refuse to behave exactly as expected.

And knowledge that exists because one human being learned something difficult enough to teach it to another.

Vacheron Constantin isn’t rejecting technology here. It is demonstrating that the future of luxury may depend upon using technical innovation to create new possibilities for human craftsmanship rather than eliminating the craftsman.

And that is why I keep returning to the Feathersnake.

More than 200 microscopic pieces of feather. Seven rare feathers. Approximately 250 hours of development and execution. Three millimeters of vertical space.

All to create a serpent that doesn’t technically need to exist in order for the watch to tell time.

And perhaps that is the ultimate definition of Métiers d’Art.

It is what happens when functionality has already been achieved—and human beings decide that isn’t enough.
